love his music.

One day, I went on to the Hong Kong Time Out website to see what’s happening around town. Then when I go through some past music events, I came across this article about a German musician. The author wrote that his music is fragile and heartbroken. This totally got my attention. So I went onto his myspace and started playing the music in the player. “Summer days in bloom” the piano and the guitar sound sounds very relaxing and refreshing to me. Then it comes his airy voice. Even with all the drums, violin, piano and guita, the song is still very calming to me.

You know how sometimes, when you’re listening to a song, you just really wish that it could hit a different note? But this song is just hitting all the right notes for me. When I was thinking: “ah, how nice if the up coming part would turn that way”, and it did!. I started listening to all of his other songs. His music is very personal. Lots of his songs are soft, sad, yet calming and very elegant. It’s like watching a tragic romance slowly unfolds in front of you. Heartbreaking, yet beautiful, it was absolutely addictive. Some people might thinks the lyrics is too whiney thought.

Read a lot of his interview and get to understand a little bit of his view of the world. The more I read, the more I love about his work. As you started to know the story behind the lyrics, it just all make sense. I think it’s a privilege to get this close to someone’s personal story and emotions.

Of course, I get SO MAD that I found about about Maximilian a month too late. He had a small concert in Hong Kong a month ago…… darn. Anyway, I’m pretty sure he’ll be back one day. Or I’ll definitely go to Germany to see him in concert, or better yet, busking on the street of Berlin.

My favorites from Maximilian Hecker:

  • Summer Days in Bloom
  • Miss Underwater
  • White
  • Dying
  • No More Lies to Reach You
  • Maybe one day I’ll create a collection inspired by his world.

Is foreign language really that cool?

Posted in Language by Katharine on May 13, 2011

Living in a Chinese speaking society, where people believe in “better English means better live”, is doomed to come across someone who just looooove to throw English words (or any foreign languages) around. They would try to squeeze in a lots of English words within a Chinese conversation. This is one thing I hate a lot about people here. Especially those people DON’T SAY THINGS RIGHT, and think that they’re ultimate cool and all for knowing extra foreign vocabularies. my ass.

Does it really makes you look cool when you can confuse people with foreign words? When you talk to people, it’s about COMMUNICATION and understanding the conversation. Showing off makes you look like an a-hole, while saying things wrongs makes you look like an idiot.

Often I heard people talking about where would they want to live in the future. of course it got me think about where I want to live…

don’t think i want to live in the middle of no where, so it has to be somewhere still close to the city. but would be nice to stay somewhere quite. Then it hit my mind that I’d love to stay somewhere near the water.

When I was living in Brooklyn (New York), I had to cross over the river everyday by the D train. and now in Hong Kong I can see the coastline right from my bedroom. I just realized how much I love being able to see the sea everyday.

so yea, next time I heard that question, I’ll say “somewhere near by the water”.

    oh my……………

I’m not a big fan of candies, but when it comes to chocolate… I just completely lose it.
But then I don’t care about those average chocolate, hated it every time I walked pass that Hershey’s stores on around Broadway.

I don’t know what it is that makes sugar and milk taste so much better with cocoa.
my favorite? Still those little milk chocolate balls wrapped up by a light blue foil by FREY’S

    i waaaaaaaaaaaaant it now.

there’s a box of French artisan chocolate sitting on the table. It’s a gift from a friend.
I really should have waited until my mom comes hom to open it… but well………
that’s a bit asking too much.

    Next trip

I recently began to plan a 3 weeks trips to Eastern Europe in September.

    Copenhagen > Berlin > Prague > Vienna
and see a coupe of surrounding smaller towns.

I knew Scandinavia would be expensive. but god… I didn’t expect it to be THAT expensive.
I can hardly find a decent hostel under 30 EURO.
This realization lead to my registration at couch surfing.com

I’ve heard of this for a while, but never really consider the possibility of being part of this community until ….today.
    well. we’ll see.
If i can get a place to stay for free through couch surfing,
then my september trip is gonna be ON!

    Gosh, I’m broke.

    True Blood

Posted in TV + Movie by Katharine on January 23, 2011

Years ago, before I moved out of New York, I remember the whole buzz about vampire just got started. I remember everyone was talking about True Blood. and I was like…. “what’s the big deal about it?” I tried watching an episode or two, but wasn’t too into it. Well…it’s the same old story… Human girl get attracted to an vampire who shows some humanity in him. He risks everything for her blablabla….

So I put it behind my mind for quite awhile, thinking I’d never be interested in this TV series with all actors speaking with the southern accent.

Somehow, I got bored few days ago and started watching it…. I think the pilot really sold it. Cause after watching that episode, I was so addicted…. damn it. The portrayal of Bill Compton is amazing, it is magnetic. I mean I’d die for that “look” from a guy.

It took me 6 days to finish watching all 3 seasons.
It felt sooooooo great. But damn, now I gotta wait till June for the 4th season.

    For the record,

I was browsing through the website of Timeout Magazine (Hong Kong), and came across a short article about a German musician, Maximilian Hecker. His music was described as “airy pop” and “heartbroken fragile love songs”. Curious, and so I went to his myspace page and played a few songs.

I absolutely love his style. His tune does make your heart sinks. Beautiful melody… one after another. Some of his music actually reminds me of Iron and Wine.

Right now, I’m obsessed with the following tracks:
    -Summer Days in Bloom
    -Miss Underwater

    So beautiful that it hurts.

What he wrote on his website touches my heart.
“My songs are full of love, my life is not. But it will be – some day.”

It’s the spirit of after going through so much darkness, you still believe in the bliss from brightness.

it’s only the beginning of the month

and I have already spent more than I planned…..
lol, but the new coat and shoes are so nice and really worth it………….

well…guess I’ll have to cut down on other things then.

Interestingly… I recently realized that I don’t like to talk about my work in details.
