ICQ experience

Posted in Uncategorized by Katharine on April 2, 2009

So recently I reopened something I was very familiar with, the ICQ. The first time I used it was probably 12 years ago. I had a 7 digit UIN. Logged in late at night, watching that ICQ flower spin, followed by a distinctive ICQ tune. I made a lot of net-friends at that time, once my list had reached 500 users… and I remembered what I talked about to most of them.

Eventually MSN kicked in, more and more of my classmate and closer friends were using MSN. Since it also got a lot of spam, I stopped using it. Then I forgot my password

These days I suddenly retrieved my long lost password. I logged in my ICQ, and started using it again. After so many years, the program is still pretty bad. Still a lot of bugs, with lots of unwanted plug-ins. I just wante a chat software that has a nice interface, free of game features, sans nonsenses with all its function working properly. There support team is still very irresponsible and useless… But none the less, there is still a certain charm using ICQ.

Whenever I sign in, I start to get lots of notice saying who and who added me. Apparently, ICQ canceled the need of authorization in order to add someone, which I am very upset about… Most of those who added me are Russian, easten european, and then Chinese.

I really don’t mind talking to some of them. But come on, a lot of them can’t even type proper English. Lots of them talk through an online translator, and the translation is often really poor that you can hardly understand it. This situation is getting more and more frustrating.

First I’m not an english tutor, I don’t have the patience to teach someone english (mine isn’t that great in first case), or the patience to guess what they’re trying to say. You really want to kill yourselves talking to English translation from russian by an online translator. The worse is when you tell them you don’t understand them, they never make the effort to explain it. Instead they just drop the topic and move on to next one, but the next one is just as confusing as the first one…Or they started to say it in Russian. I mean… why on earth you think I can read Russian if I stated that I speak English only?

The worse is that when you finally have to give up and tell them that you cannot understand them at all, and can’t keep the conversation going, they turned nasty. Yea, they first demanded you to talk to them. While they know their language skill is not good enough for a real conversation. Then when you refuse to keep talking to them, they swear at you. Mostly in Russian, or the simple F word or B word….

So this is one type of person I hate dealing with online. The other type are those perverts. Send you a message and asked you to send them pictures or turn the webcam on. Take an example from yesterday. I think this one was from Turkey.

[Before the following conversation, he already sent me 5 messages that I didn’t respond]
He: Hi girl! How are you?
Me: Sorry, busy. can’t talk.
He: Pls, I wanna ask you something
Me: quick then.
He: Can you show me 1 min
Me: (I thought is just bad grammar, so I said)I don’t know how to show you time
He: No, show me you pls, I wanna see your sexy body.
He: quick
Me: no, first of all I’m busy, second, I hate perverts. go to hell.
He: pls, Don’t show face , only little bit. show something.

Come on this is such a disgrace to the male population. You just get online and harass any girls online, thinking all girls online are whores and dying to show off their body to them online, so that they can masturbate in front of their screen alone in their room? I think those might be ordinary / normal guys in reality, but once they’re online, they turned to be a different person. Honestly, dude, pay to a porn site instead of insulting girls online!

Of course there are a lot of great people I met online. Interesting cultures and opinions, includes some good Russian. This is what keep me using ICQ.

My sister uses ICQ and my relatives use QQ…
I prefer Msn, even if the new Msn seems abit buggy on my laptop. I am quite glad I’m a guy so I don’t have to deal with sleazes throughout my life.

You should teach English in HK you know. English tutoring pays very well in China.

well if my grammar is slightly better, or I’m slightly more interested in teaching and have a teeny little bit more patience, I might really consider to be a teacher. But oh well, I don’t have that patience with the kids… haha.

LOL… Kids arn’t that hard. Teach high school students. I had to help my cousins with their English work last time I went to HK. They do so much tutoring every week, I would be rich if I tutored English.

You would. you don’t even have to pay tax, if you are a private tutor.

Lol, even the more reason to tutor English. I definitely would if I ever moved back to Hong Kong or Mainland China.
